Experience and Leveling

Experience is what pushes Pokemon from one level to the next. Leveling affects evolution, stat growth, and when a team reaches its next move or stat threshold.

How experience works

Gaining experience moves a Pokemon toward its next level. Different species can grow at different rates, so leveling speed is not identical across the Pokedex. In modern games, the party often shares experience automatically through Exp. Share, and Lucky Egg boosts the amount gained. Rare Candy raises a Pokemon by one level immediately.

Experience groups and growth rates

Some Pokemon need less experience to level up than others. Growth groups such as Fast, Medium Fast, Medium Slow, Slow, Erratic, and Fluctuating control the curve. That means two Pokemon at the same level can be very different in how much work they take to train.

What leveling changes

Leveling changes more than the number next to a Pokemon's name. It can unlock evolutions, new level-up moves, and stronger stats. Experience controls when those upgrades happen, and it is separate from IVs, EVs, and nature.

How leveling connects to team building

Leveling works alongside natures, IVs, EVs, and breeding when you want to build a full team.

FAQ

Does Exp. Share work if a Pokemon did not battle?

In modern games, yes. The party can gain experience even if only one Pokemon fought. In older games, the Pokemon must have one turn in battle. Fainted Pokemon do not gain exp.

Do all Pokemon level at the same rate?

No. Experience growth can vary by species and game rules.

What is the point of a Rare Candy?

It is the fastest way to raise a Pokemon by one level when you do not want to battle for it.

Is experience the same as EVs?

No. Experience raises level, while EVs improve stat growth.
