Home / Abilities
Abilities provide effects that in battle or in the overworld. Abilities were introduced in Generation III. Pokémon may only have one ability at a time. Before Generation VI, abilities could not be changed, except during evolution, which is deterministic (based on the previous ability and form change).
Introduced in Generation V, a hidden ability is an ability Pokémon typically do not have access to. There are usually special methods to encounter a Pokémon with a hidden ability. Pokémon can also have a hidden ability from specific events, and when breeding a Pokémon with a hidden ability, its offspring have a chance of receivng that hidden ability. In Generation III and IV, abilities could not be inherited by breeding. Since Generation V, Pokémon could pass down their ability.
Abilities are passive effects that influence battles and sometimes exploration. They can change damage, block status, or enable special interactions. Every Pokémon has at least one possible ability.
Many Pokémon have two standard abilities it can be born with. Only one ability is active at a time, chosen when the Pokémon is obtained. Ability choices can affect strategy.
A hidden ability is a special ability that is not usually found on wild Pokémon. It is often obtained through specific methods like special encounters or items. Hidden abilities can provide unique advantages.
Abilities do not stack on a single Pokémon because only one ability is active at a time. Some team strategies can stack similar effects across multiple Pokémon. Field effects and abilities can also combine in double battles.
Most abilities activate automatically when their conditions are met. Some only work in battle, while others affect overworld encounters or weather. Abilities can also be suppressed by certain moves and effects.
Some abilities have overworld effects like increasing encounter rates or affecting item pickup. Others only function during battle. Each ability description usually states when it applies.
Yes, certain moves and effects can suppress abilities or ignore them for a turn. Examples include Gastro Acid or Mold Breaker style effects. This can change matchups dramatically.
In many modern games, items like Ability Capsules or Ability Patches can switch abilities. Check each game ruleset for details.
