IVs (Individual Values)

IVs are hidden stat values from 0 to 31 that give each Pokemon its own stat ceiling. In modern games, each of the six stats gets its own IV, so two Pokemon of the same species can still have different final stats even when they are the same level and nature.

How IVs work

Each stat uses its own IV when the game calculates the final number shown on the summary screen. Higher IVs mean higher final stats, which matters for HP, Attack, Defense, Sp. Attack, Sp. Defense, and Speed. A perfect IV is 31.

When IVs are set

IVs are fixed when a Pokemon is generated. Wild encounters, gift Pokemon, raid catches, and eggs already have their IVs decided before training starts. Hyper Training can make a stat act as if it has a perfect IV with Bottle Caps or Gold Bottle Caps, but it does not rewrite the stored value.

How players improve IVs

Breeding is the main way to pass IVs down. Some special encounters also guarantee strong IVs, and Hyper Training is the fastest way to finish a trained Pokemon. IVs work alongside natures, EVs, and breeding.

When low IVs help

Low Speed IVs can help on Trick Room teams because slower Pokemon can move first under reversed Speed order. Low Attack IVs can reduce confusion damage and Foul Play damage on special attackers. Most other stats want the highest IV possible.

How IVs fit the final stat

IVs are part of the base stat formula. They do not change a Pokemon's species or level; they only push the calculated stats up or down inside that species' natural range. A wild or hatched Pokemon can look identical on paper but still end up with a better stat spread.
