All Pokémon Egg Groups

Egg Groups determine which Pokémon are able to breed with others. Egg Groups were introduced in Geneeration II. A Pokémon may belong to one or two Egg Groups.

Egg Groups are based on biological traits of a Pokémon species. Egg Groups are usually preserved when a Pokémon evolves, except for baby Pokémon and some rare exceptions (Nidorina, Nidoqueen, and Shedinja). Pokémon that are unable to breed are in the No Eggs group.

Egg Groups FAQ

What are egg groups?

Egg groups are breeding categories that determine which Pokémon can produce eggs together. A Pokémon can have one or two egg groups.

How do egg groups affect breeding?

Pokémon can breed if they share at least one egg group and are opposite gender or one is Ditto. Typically, legendaries and mythicals cannot breed. Egg groups also influence which moves can be inherited. This makes them important for breeding strategy. You may need to breed a Pokémon of group A with a Pokémon of groups A and B and then the child with a Pokémon of group B to get an egg move from a group A Pokémon to a group B Pokémon.

Can Pokémon belong to more than one egg group?

Yes, many Pokémon belong to two egg groups. This lets them breed with more partners and pass down moves more easily. Dual egg groups increase breeding flexibility.

What is the Undiscovered egg group?

The Undiscovered group includes Pokémon that cannot breed, such as legendaries, mythicals, and most baby Pokémon. These Pokémon cannot produce eggs at all, even when paired with Ditto.

What is an egg move?

Egg moves are special moves that a Pokémon inherits from its parents through breeding. These are useful because typically these moves cannot be learned otherwise through level up or machine.

Do egg groups affect egg moves?

Egg moves are inherited through breeding and often depend on compatible egg group parents. Using a parent in the same group can pass down specific moves. This is a common way to get rare move combinations.
