Sleep in Pokemon

Sleep is a major status condition that prevents a Pokemon from acting for a limited time and raises catch rate when the target is wild.

How sleep works

A sleeping Pokemon cannot use moves until it wakes up. In modern games, sleep lasts a random number of turns, so the exact wake-up timing can vary from battle to battle.

Common sleep sources

Sleep Powder, Spore, Hypnosis, Yawn, and Rest are the most common sleep sources. Abilities like Insomnia, Vital Spirit, Sweet Veil, and Comatose can block sleep or change how it works.

How sleep is cured or blocked

Awakening, Chesto Berry, Lum Berry, and Full Heal clear sleep. Early Bird shortens sleep, and Safeguard can block it from landing.

FAQ

Can a sleeping Pokemon attack?

No. Sleep prevents action until the Pokemon wakes up.

Does Rest still work if sleep is bad?

Yes. Rest is a move that heals the user and then puts it to sleep.

Why is sleep so strong?

Sleep stops the target from acting, and it also gives one of the largest catch-rate bonuses in the game.
