Ability Mechanics
Abilities are passive effects that can change battle flow, weather, damage, and status interactions. Hidden abilities add another layer of value for team building.
Ability slots
Most Pokemon have one or two regular abilities, and some also have a Hidden Ability. The slot matters because the same species can play very differently depending on which ability it has.
When abilities trigger
Some abilities trigger when a Pokemon enters battle, some trigger on contact, some trigger when a Pokemon is hit by a specific move type, and some stay active all battle. For example, Intimidate lowers the opposing Pokemon's Attack when the user enters battle, Drizzle starts rain on entry, Static and Flame Body punish contact, Levitate is always active, Water Absorb heals from Water-type hits, and Rain Dish restores HP at the end of the turn in rain.
Common ability interactions
Abilities can be overwritten, copied, suppressed, or ignored depending on the move or field effect involved. Skill Swap, Trace, Role Play, and Gastro Acid change how an ability is used, while Mold Breaker-style effects ignore some defensive abilities and Neutralizing Gas suppresses active abilities on the field.
Hidden abilities and changes
Hidden abilities are rarer and often come from special encounters, raids, or breeding. Ability Ability Capsules and Ability Patches can change abilities in modern games, so ability choice is not always locked forever.
